Abstract
This IDC Buyer Case Study describes the implementation of WAN application
delivery technology at a pharmaceuticals company located in Massachusetts. In
2006, the company implemented WAN acceleration technology from Riverbed to
support its disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives between its
primary datacenter (located in Massachusetts) and its disaster recovery site
(located in Pennsylvania). Prior to the installation, recovery times were
measured in days and recovery points were at one week. Currently, the company
reports dramatic improvements, with recovery time objectives (RTOs) in the two-
to three-hour range and recovery point objectives (RPOs) at one day.
This document provides a detailed examination of the company' s IT, network, and
application infrastructure; the evaluation process for WAN application delivery
technology; and the implementation results of Riverbed' s Steelhead technology.
Specific benefits from this technology deployment and future initiatives are
highlighted as a means for other end users to benchmark whether WAN application
delivery technology is applicable within their environments.
