Abstract
This IDC study reports the findings, gathered in July and August 2007, and
analysis resulting from a survey of 34 Canadian primary care providers. In
particular, the study speaks to the business and IT issues and challenges cited
as important to this segment of the healthcare sector. Furthermore, the study
explores future implications for the use of IT in primary care.
According to Jan Duffy, senior healthcare analyst, IDC Canada, "Canada' s
primary care physicians use IT much less than their counterparts in many other
countries. For many primary practitioners, improving operational efficiency may
be the only way to relieve the pressures of daily demands, and thus have the
ability to turn their attention to improving patient care. In turn, improving
operational efficiency will require the use of IT. However, because the market
is fragmented, with multiple operating and funding models, and in many cases
reluctant customers, penetrating the primary care marketplace is a challenge.
The impetus behind the rollout of a pan-national EHR will undoubtedly drive an
increase in the use of IT by Canada' s primary care providers."
