Abstract
This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J7080106)
analyzes Japan' s PC market in 1Q07 from the perspectives of portable PC screen
sizes, HDD, and TV tuners in order to illuminate the current product trends and
to provide market forecasts. The annual data in this study for the years up to
2006 are actual values while the data for 2007 and beyond are forecast values.
As for quarterly data, the data for the period up to 1Q07 (January-March) are
actual values while the data for 2Q07 (April-June) and beyond are forecast
values. All data are updated as of June 2007.
"SSD (Solid State Drive), which is a large-capacity NAND flash memory, entered
the market in 2006 as the next-generation auxiliary storage device. Attention
is paid to installing SDD in portable PC with low power consumption and no
mechanism. Although the current cost per gigabyte of SSD is expensive compared
to HDD, the deployment rate is likely to increase sharply once the price comes
down to the level of 2.5-inch HDD. PC vendors will have to consider development
of SSD-based portable PCs while reviewing low power consumption and excessive
shock resistance," observes Hirotoshi Asano, Senior Market Analyst, PCs, IDC
Japan.
