Abstract
This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J8120102)
looks at the performance of the Japan tape drive and tape automation markets
between 1H06 and 1H07, and provides forecasts for the 2007 through 2011. The
markets are sized and forecasts based on revenue, unit shipments, and platform.
Tape drive shipments are sized and forecast by capacity. Meanwhile, tape
automation shipments are sized and forecast by the number of cartridge
equipped. The tape technologies covered include half-inch cartridge (3480/3490,
3590, 3592, TS1120, 9840/9940/T10000), LTO, DLT/SDLT, 8mm, AIT/SAIT, DDS/DAT,
SLR, Travan, DLT-1, VXA.
"Japan companies are shifting rapidly toward disk-based backup and this has
rocked the position of tape storage. Amid this trend, it is getting more and
more important for Japan tape storage suppliers to attract new customers while
it continues to promote tape storage investments among existing users in order
to develop their businesses in the future," observes Ayuchi Takamatsu, Research
Analyst, Storage systems, IDC Japan.
