Abstract

The IDC study focuses on the New Zealand wireless service provider (WSP) market, which remains in a state of infancy, but is at a stage of potential large-scale growth. Wireless technologies have the potential to completely change the telco ecosystem in New Zealand and globally. However, this is still an immature market, with many uncertainties surrounding both technologies and business cases for these technologies. Both incumbents, Telecom and Vodafone, have their respective 3G cellular data services in operation, recognising wireless is the way of the future. To compete, alternative service providers (SPs) have moved their focus towards WiMAX and WiFi services. Major participants on this journey include Kordia, Woosh, Compass Communications, BayCity, and CallPlus.

"New technologies have the potential to fundamentally change the fixed wireless access (FWA) market in New Zealand. The success of WiMax in the war against cellular technology, largely driven by forces outside the control of New Zealand telco operators, and the ability of wireless incumbent competitors to successfully implement WiMax will shape the future ecosystem in New Zealand," says Tim Shepheard, Market Analyst, Telecommunications, IDC New Zealand.
