Worldwide Application Development and Deployment 2008 Top 10 Predictions

Abstract

This IDC study identifies and discusses the top 10 trends that IDC believes will have a material impact on the application development and deployment (AD&D) markets during 2008 and the first half of 2009. These predictions cover a broad range of topics, including SOA, business process management, event-driven architectures, on-demand development, virtualization, and software appliances.

However, the specter of a tepid U.S. GDP in 2008 weighs heavily on everyone' s mind. There is virtual certainty that financial service vendors will be hit especially hard. Given the pullback of consumer end-of-year spending and dramatic oscillations in the Dow on even modest bad news, it appears that the economy is on a tenuous footing that will likely have some impact on IT spending in 2008 and 2009.

"Despite the uncertainty that exists in the U.S. economy, vendors are delivering development and deployment technology and tools that significantly improve organizational productivity," said Stephen D. Hendrick, group vice president for application development and deployment research at IDC. "Additionally, new business models focused around on-demand and in-the-cloud computing may finally unlock the door to the middle market."
