Abstract
This IDC study provides an analysis of the worldwide videogame console and
handheld hardware and software markets. In addition to a high-level overview
of market trends and competitive differences, it also provides a forecast by
major region (North America, Western Europe, Japan, and the rest of the world
[ROW]) of hardware and software shipments by platform and hardware and
software revenue in aggregate with historical data from 2005 to 2007 and
forecast data from 2008 to 2012.
"Gaming is now mass market entertainment," says Billy Pidgeon, research
manager for IDC' s Consumer Markets: Gaming research. "The Nintendo Wii and
games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band are mainstream interactive
entertainment enjoyed by new, lapsed, and hardcore gamers. Industry revenue
for dedicated console and handheld hardware and software attained an
unprecedented high of $46.4 billion in 2007 and will grow 22.9% in 2008 to
reach $57.1 billion."
