Abstract
This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J7400314)
presents an analysis of the Japan storage utility services market' s revenue
performance in 2006 as well as forecasts from 2007 to 2011. IDC analyzes the
storage utility services market from two perspectives - the types of services
provided and the types of connection used. By IDC' s taxonomy, there are two
types of services - "primary data outsourcing" and "backup and archive
service." Likewise, there are two connection types - "datacenter connection"
and "Internet/remote connection."
"There was a huge gap in market conditions for the datacenter storage services
segment and the Internet/remote storage services segment in the 2006 Japan
storage utility services market. In contrast to the smooth growth seen in the
Internet/remote storage services segment since 2005, the datacenter storage
services segment was unable to overcome the trend toward high value-added
server business. As part of their efforts to provide comprehensive services to
datacenter users, it will be important for SPs to see how much they can
contribute to the improvement of user satisfaction in the datacenter storage
services segment rather than focus on service profitability by providing
storage functions," observes Yasusuke Suzuki, research manager, Storage
Systems, IDC.
