Abstract

This IDC study examines the results of a survey of 518 IT and line-of-business (LOB) executives at large, medium-sized, and small businesses about their preferences, experiences, and buying intentions regarding services related to open source. The survey was conducted by IDC in December 2007 and compares results with an earlier survey administered in 2006.

"Open source is growing in importance to end-user organizations," according to Gard Little, program manager for Emerging Services Opportunities at IDC. "We found almost 60% of respondents said that their company' s spending on open source increased, in terms of relative percentage of IT spending." The survey examines the top reasons for initiating adoption of open source, which fee-based services were purchased in 2007, planned purchases for 2008, respondents' assessments of the challenges faced by vendors and perceptions of which vendors were the most innovative in delivering open source-related services.
