Abstract
This study draws on the results of IDC' s European Vertical Market survey,
carried out in November 2007 in the top 5 Western European countries (France,
Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.) among 2,077 companies with more than 20
employees.
The survey looks at vertical market ICT spending directions, solution
priorities, investment plans, adoption of new technologies and mobility,
outsourcing, the role of IT in the organization, and customer satisfaction with
their IT suppliers.
Focusing on mobile solutions adoption by vertical market, this study assesses:
- Percentage of employees adopting mobile phone for business use and wireless LANs
- WiFi adoption and plans of adoption
- Adoption and investment plans for mobile solutions
- Access devices to access/transact corporate resources or services in a mobile/wireless environment
- Preferred mobile solution strategy (single vendors providing integrated solution, individual best-in-class components, in-house custom development, third-party custom development)
- Adoption of mobile devices as primary phones
- Key barriers to mobility implementation
"Mobility will be an important area of investment for almost all industry
segments in the short to medium term. The financial sector, including banking
and financial services/insurance, will be the most interesting market in the
next 12 months. Customer service and support, sales force automation, and
office/collaborative applications will be the main areas of investment. A
winning marketing strategy for IT and telecom providers is to offer an
integrated solution," said Giacomo Laurini, senior analyst, IDC European
Vertical markets.
