This IDC study provides a forecast of the worldwide disk storage systems market
for 2008-2012 as well as discussion of assumptions and major market trends.
"Every several years, the overall market demand for storage systems takes on a
new form," said Natalya Yezhkova, research manager, storage systems research.
"In the past few years, we observed the emergence of new sweet spots driven by
emerging new technologies (e.g., SATA or iSCSI), by new significant groups of
customers (e.g., small and medium-sized businesses [SMBs], emerging countries,
or certain vertical industries), or by new practices in storing data influenced
by company mandates around initiatives such as compliance with regulatory
requirements or data protection. For the next forecast period, the new major
shift in demand is driven by content-centric customers."
"One of the most critical challenges for the storage industry over the next
several years will be to gauge the impact of new network-centric and
content-centric datacenters on more traditional customers," said Richard
Villars, vice president, storage systems, at IDC. "These businesses are
redefining the rules when it comes to system density, balancing performance
versus capacity, and price per gigabyte. As more organizations begin to create
and archive large pools of file-based content, many will want solutions that
have similar features/functions/price points to those being delivered to
leading content depots."
