Abstract
This IDC study analyzes the reasons why consumers increasingly give up their
landlines to rely on cell phones alone. Clear metrics are missing around who
exactly is cutting the cord, why they do so, and - crucially - why some do not.
Data from IDC' s 2008 U.S. Service Provider Competition Survey quantifies these
trends. IDC reports the prevalence of consumers without a landline, the reasons
consumers give for dropping or retaining wireline service, and analyzes current
and future forces that accelerate or slow down displacement.
According to Irene Berlinsky, research analyst, Multiplay Services,
"Understanding the demographic of consumers who give up their landline is more
critical than ever for cable MSOs and telcos. This group of consumers - already
sizable - will grow larger with the economic downturn and arrival of
"unlimited" cell phone plans. Appreciating the numerous drivers of displacement
is necessary to both stem landline losses and churn voice customers from a
competitor."
