Abstract

This IDC study examines the EMEA and Western European blade server market, providing historical shipment and revenue figures for 2007 and forecast for 2008-2012. Even though IT spending in Europe has experienced a slowdown, IDC expects blade servers to continue their rise, acting as a pull for the rest of the market. Server blades grew by 37.2% in 2007 to represent 11.8% of all server units shipped in EMEA and 12.3% in Western Europe. IDC foresees that this trend will continue over the next few years, though at a slower pace. The predicted compound annual growth rate in units is predicted to be 31.0% through 2012 in EMEA, 35.1% in Central Eastern Europe, and 31.2% in Western Europe. In 2012 server blade shipments will exceed 1 million units in EMEA, generating annual revenue of over $4.5 billion.

"In a European server market environment affected by price erosion and showing signs of a slowdown, blade servers have a good revenue potential, with high-double-digit CAGRs in revenue for the next few years. This is why shares in this segment will be fought over with some intensity in the coming months," said Giorgio Nebuloni, research analyst with IDC European Systems and Infrastructure Solutions.
