Abstract

TEL needs to introduce new processing tools into the market in sectors that will show stronger than average growth over the next several years in order to maintain it' s second place position in the industry, according to the report Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL): Strategies, Technologies, Markets, recently published by The Information Network, a New Tripoli, PA-based market research company.

TEL was the market leader in each of the following sectors in 2004: Coater/Developer, Spin-On Deposition (SOD), Vertical Tube CVD, Dielectric Etch, and Thermal Processing System, according to the report. In these categories in 2004 it gained market share in: Spin-On Deposition (SOD), Vertical Tube CVD, Dielectric Etch, and Thermal Processing Systems.

"TEL' s market share has risen consistently from 2001 to 2004," notes Dr. Robert N. Castellano, President of The Information Network. "On the negative site, only 28% of TEL' s revenues were in sectors that exhibited stronger than the average market growth on 2004, namely coater/developer, scrubber, and dielectric etch."

TEL entered the semiconductor business in 1963 but didn' t enter the top 10 in led the world in equipment sales until 1983, with $98 million in revenues. TEL was in the top 10 rankings until 1989 when it gained first place with $635 million in revenues. The company maintained its 1st place rankings until 1992 when it relinquished 1st place to Applied Materials. TEL has maintained a 2nd place position since then, according to the report. However, TEL is slowly catching up. In 1999, TEL' s revenues were less that half (46%) of Applied Materials, increasing to 55% in 2001 and 63% in 2004.

"TEL' s success has also been a result of an extensive combination of collaborative research with consortia, joint ventures, and technology investments," added Dr. Castellano. "But the company needs capitalize on these endeavors and enter new sectors with their own original products that will grow above the industry average over the coming years. Knocking on TEL' s back door is ASML"

The Information Network is a leading consulting and market research company addressing the semiconductor, computer, and telecommunications industries.
