Abstract
In 2005, the top five retail chain players in China were Gome, Suning, Yongle,
Five Star, and Dazhong. Of the five, Gome, Suning, and Yongle registered
growth rates exceeding 180% in 2005, with Suning achieving a growth rate as
high as 228%. This demonstrates the rapid growth of Chinese retail chains and
their emerging role as key players in the Chinese channel structure.
In 2006, the leading player Gome Electrical Appliances acquired Yongle, which
ranked third, while US retail player BestBuy gained control over the number
four player, Jiangsu Five Star Appliance. Moves like these induced alterations
in the Chinese channel structure. This report is dedicated to the analysis of
the development and current status of the major Chinese retail chain players.
