Abstract
Digital TV services have been launched worldwide, and China has established
several digital TV standards, including DMB-TH (terrestrial), DVB-C (cable),
and DVB-S (satellite), as well as standards for the separation of a smart card
from a set-top box. With an installed base of 340 million TV units, China is
becoming a major set-top box market. Driving by increasing demand from the
industry and supported by the Chinese government' s policies, Haier IC, Guoxin
Science & Technology, HiSilicon, Fullhan Microelectronics Celestial
Semiconductor, and Image Silicon have made their foray into the set-top box IC
market. In 2005, Haier IC' s revenue reached 230 million RMB (US$30 million;
US$1=7.7RMB); HiSilicon and Fullhan Microelectronics have developed
H.264-comptible ICs. This report will analyze the development of these Chinese
set-top box IC suppliers.
