Last year, Wall Street was insatiable in its appetite for new optical start-ups to fund. Halfway through 2001, however, conditions in the optical sector had deteriorated, prompting Merrill Lynch to issue reports that labeled the industry as being in a "dead zone." Insight does not give credence to the argument that claims a capacity glut will continue to force down carrier bandwidth pricing far into the future, slamming the door on new optical product development and deployment. The fact is that data transmission demands remain as strong as ever, and the investment cycle is expected to begin regenerating in late 2002.
In this report, Insight provides a detailed analysis of the worldwide market for SONET and DWDM transmission systems. Included are an examination of fiber deployment trends and forecasts for device-level developments. A discussion of the overall market trends that will impact system sales is also included.
