Abstract
Description
There is an increasing level of activity in areas relating to what many people
have termed the "mobile wallet". This includes technology, applications and
services that enable and deliver payments, banking, monetary transfers,
ticketing, information transfer and physical access that are served via a
mobile phone. With focused attention from bodies such as the GSMA, StoLPaN,
the NFC Forum, the Bluetooth SIG and the Mobey Forum the real world solutions
that are required by consumers, financial companies, retailers and other
stakeholders are being developed. As a result the level of services being
trialled and launched is rising rapidly and consumers are adopting these in
many different markets.
Much of what is interesting is the diversity of these approaches being adopted
in different global regions. This diversity is in the form of alternative
applications, various partnerships and adaptive technologies. It also
manifests itself in the way that these are being tailored to best fit the
required means and needs in each country. This report provides a focused
overview of this market and the major market drivers and inhibitors.
Statistical analysis and forecasts also provide a complete investigation of
the potential of this market.
Whilst much of the publicity and news surrounding the mobile wallet experience
and related services has focused on the ability to use a mobile phone as a
means of contactless payment there have been advances in other sectors
regarding different media for mobile payments. These services can employ one
or more of several means of connection and communication. The most commonly
used example to date is that of SMS. This can use an identifier and be sent
to short codes in order to authorise the payment or transfer of money to a
retailer, bank or another user in a peer-to-peer transaction.
Issues that are addressed by this report include:
- Which will be the primary applications that drive uptake of the mobile
wallet?
- How will the differing implementations and the timeline for NFC rollout
affect this?
- Who will own and manage the end-user experience? What role will each group
play?
- How will different business models work within the mobile wallet ecosystem
for the various stakeholders?
- What will be the major regional differences in approach, use and uptake of
mobile wallet services?
