Abstract
Public healthcare programs reimburse costs for majority of dialysis treatments
in the United States and in Western Europe. The governments of these regions
are considering proposals for controlling costs by altering the
public-sponsored healthcare programs. This move is likely to change the
profitability of the dialysis industry which has been banking on the rapid
increase in the number of dialysis patients globally.
The dialysis care market has seen major growth in the last few years and in
this segment - the most preferred method of treatment continues to be
hemodialysis which accounts for about 90% of all dialysis therapies. Another
mode of treatment - peritoneal dialysis remains the preferred method for about
10% of all dialysis patients.
The dialysis care market has also seen rapid consolidation over the last
decade and this has resulted in the emergence of only top-notch players. Two
significant acquisitions - acquisition of Renal Care Group by Fresenius
Medical Care and acquisition of Gambro by DaVita has changed the competitive
landscape of the dialysis industry. Fresenius and DaVita are now the
undisputed leaders in the dialysis services sector.
However, it is Fresenius Medical Care which has shown tremendous growth in the
past few years and clinched market shares in both dialysis care and dialysis
products market.
The report analyzes the dialysis market with focus on both the dialysis care
and dialysis products market. It is a study of the growth of dialysis globally
