Abstract
This Manufacturing Insights study examines the warranty and recall expenses in
the automotive industry as well as aerospace and in discrete manufacturing at
large. The study discusses the drivers for the growing costs of warranty claims
and spare part inventories and the actions organizations should take to create
effective quality-centric warranty and product-quality processes.
"Given vehicle complexity, the fragmented supply chain, and time-to-market
pressures, it is unrealistic to expect zero-defect products," says Joe Barkai,
program director of Product Development Strategies at IDC's Manufacturing
Insights. "Successful manufacturers should implement a three-pronged strategy:
design for serviceability, early detection and correction of quality problems,
and an umbrella product life-cycle economics framework for quality improvement
programs."
