Abstract
This Manufacturing Insights report discusses how manufacturing companies manage
the inevitable need to modify their product design from time to time. The
report discusses the types of events that trigger a design change and how
manufacturing firms manage the design change process. It also lays out
recommendations for improved processes.
Making changes to the design of exiting products is an inevitable activity all
manufacturers have to cope with. However, according to Joe Barkai, "There is a
significant gap between best-in-class manufacturers that are able to control
the number of design changes, their complexity, and the efficiency with which
they handle them, and those manufacturers that do not. Companies that excel in
managing design changes enjoy a competitive edge through faster time to market,
higher product quality, and reduced costs."
