Graphite
is a stable form of pure carbon. It is soft, has low friction and is inert.
The major use of graphite is in refractories that can withstand the
temperature of molten metals and slags. The graphite imparts high thermal
shock resistance, useful in furnace components and crucibles. Other uses
include lubricants and in brake linings.
