Abstract
Over the forecast, the market will be driven by growth in every segment of the
market, with the exception of female sterilization devices, which will face
increasing competition from transcervical female sterilization procedures. The
segment that will achieve the highest growth will be the gastric banding
market, followed by the direct energy device and the hand assist markets. The
largest segments will continue to be the internal closure device and access
device markets, because these devices are used to some degree in every
laparoscopic procedure. The value of the direct energy device market, will,
however surpass the access device market by 2008 because direct energy devices
will be rapidly adopted for a wide range of laparoscopic surgeries and new
product innovations will boost ASPs. Overall, the US laparoscopic device
market will be limited by hospitals aiming to contain laparoscopic surgery
costs by purchasing less expensive reposable, reusable, and reprocessed
devices instead of premium-priced disposables. Nonetheless, the ease-of-use
and innovations that can be incorporated into disposable products will
continue to guarantee their use over the forecast period.
