Abstract

The $635 million OTC pediatric medicines market shows all signs of continued growth, particularly as manufacturers roll out a wider range of children-only formulations that focus on ease of administration and long-lasting efficacy. In OTC Pediatrics-U.S., October2006, the first report of its kind from Mintel, a combination of close analysis of Mintel's own proprietary consumer research and of the Simmons NCS answers the questions, "Who is the OTC medicines consumer? How are more consumers attracted to the market? What product aspects are more or less preferred and why? What do consumers look for when purchasing OTC pediatric remedies?"

Especially trenchant is that the Hispanic population appears to mirror the population as a whole regarding usage, preferred delivery forms, and preferred brands. Moreover, higher household occupancy and more children in the household significantly impact usage and attitude towards OTC children's remedies. Mintel's evaluation of this range of consumer opinions enables the reader to understand and take advantage of how they affect the market.

As with any OTC remedies market, the OTC pediatric medicines industry depends largely on incidence of ailments among children. Mintel's research reveals that incidence is higher than ever, due to a range of reasons. These include children's developing immune systems; their close proximity to each other in schools, which promotes contagion; and, a growing pediatric trend towards overweight and obese children, who are more susceptible to pediatric disorders. Compounding this is the growing number of uninsured Americans, which means that many families must turn to self-diagnosis and self-care to offset rising health care costs.

This report includes children's strength OTC medicines, including:

  • liquid and tablet internal analgesics
  • liquid and tablet cold/flu/allergy remedies
  • vitamins
  • cough syrup and drops
  • liquid and tablet gastrointestinal remedies
  • other health remedies, including chest rubs, bedwetting remedies, ear care and ear drops, and motion sickness and gas remedies
