Abstract
This report reviews issues in the health insurance industry and looks to answer the following questions:
- What are the demographic and employment characteristics of Americans with private health insurance?
- Which trends are emerging in health insurance features and in the types of plans that consumers choose?
- Which insurance features do consumers want most?
- What are their attitudes about the health care and health insurance industries?
Health care expenditures in the U.S. continue to grow at a pace faster than inflation. While this trend may moderate in coming years, it jeopardizes enrollment in employer-sponsored health insurance plans. However, private insurers and their corporate clients anticipate that consumer-driven health plans with associated tax-savings accounts may make consumers more cost-conscious in their health care decisions. In turn, this will help employers manage health-related expenditures more effectively.
For this report, Mintel commissioned an exclusive survey to examine consumer attitudes towards their health insurance. The survey reveals that consumers are most concerned about choice of doctors and low premiums when selecting health insurance. In addition, they have a much greater degree of trust in individual healthcare providers than they do in the institutions that serve them. This suggests that healthcare institutions have a significant amount of work to do in improving the image of the industry as well as their individual brands.
