Abstract
The market for pickles chutney and relish (PCR) is estimated to have a value of £141 million in 2007. However, the market has not grown in real terms for the past five years, and is not likely to grow in the next five years either. Although there has been some innovation within sour pickles, the wider market has not attracted the attention of younger, more culinary adventurous consumers. However, there are some signs that this is being addressed. Chutneys are showing modest growth, but this is insufficient in compensating for the poor performance of the sour pickle sector, which accounts for almost two thirds of sales.
Many products in the pickles, chutneys and relishes market also serve as accompaniments.
Mintel groups the products in this market largely according to their named positioning:
- Pickles - this sector comprises sour pickles, ie products in pickling spice and vinegar, such as onions, gherkins, cucumbers, cabbage, beetroot and walnuts; piccalilli; and sweet pickles, eg Branston.
- Chutneys - chutneys originated in India and were based on mangoes and chillies. The majority of commercially produced chutneys are still based on fruits rather than vegetables.
- Relishes - relish is a US concept, strongly associated with the consumption of burgers and barbecued meats. The majority of products offered could equally well be described as pickles or chutney. Gentleman's Relish is excluded from this report, as it is essentially a savoury spread/anchovy paste.
