Abstract
As of 2007, active participation in stocks and shares based investments in the UK remains largely a minority pursuit, with alternative investments, such as property, being a much more popular destination for potential retail investor money - despite strong performance in the stock market. At the same time, however, the Internet has continued to transform how people are getting involved in stocks and shares-based investing, with the number of online clients increasing by 110% from 2002 to 2006.
This report examines the key issues facing stocks and shares investing, ranging from demographic and economic factors to the potential impact of regulatory changes and competing asset classes. A market size section details changes in retail investor direct share ownership and other share-based assets, while the report also identifies the key players and innovations transforming the market place. Finally, consumer research highlights attitudes and behaviour towards shareholding.
