Abstract
Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) are entering a new phase with next generation
low Earth orbit constellation and new ancillary terrestrial components. In a
move to quench the ever-increasing thirst for voice, audio, data and video
anywhere, anytime, the satellite industry is responding to growing mobile
communications needs.
In the vision to create a truly global network, satellite products and
services are becoming key enablers to sustain networks that deliver rich media
"communications-on-the-move" (COTM) and "communications-on-the-pause" (COTP)
across a wider array of platforms. Players in this space know that customer
needs are on the upward slope and command ever-specialized products at
acceptable if not lower prices.
However, the market suffers from a reminiscence of past failures, as these
make the headlines time and again as witnessed by the demise of Connexion by
Boeing last year. The low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations are still
hard-pressed to fill the promises of serving millions of callers after a fresh
start several years ago. And L-band broadband services initiated recently have
generally not yet met expectations despite a much anticipated start. Yet, more
is on the way.
So what is making the MSS picture so dynamic, yet so uncertain? Government
affairs, emergency communications and military concerns worldwide are hungrier
than ever for communications-on-the-move. The recent MSS Ancillary Terrestrial
Component (ATC) authorization in North America is pushed behind multi-billion
dollar capital investments in satellites and wireless capabilities. And LEO
satellite operators are planning to launch new and replacement multi-billion
dollar constellations in the next few years.
Will these developments be sustainable? Will investors take on inherent risks
in the MSS industry as much as with any other satellite venture? How long can
the steady growth rates for "classical" voice and data mobile services last?
Will all the current technologies and the revolution that MSS-ATC claims
solidify the business case? What can be expected from a combined MSS-ATC
offering in light of a highly competitive terrestrial mobile market? What are
the drivers for current and new mobile satellite business? Which vertical
segments and which regions are most likely to be leaders? What volume of
broadband mobile satellite services can penetrate the aeronautical, maritime
and land-vehicle markets?
These and other aspects of the mobile satellite services market will be
assessed as part of this completely updated NSR study. NSR will address the
general market trends, user requirements, and the role that satellites can
play, as well as the regulatory and business issues that affect the use of
satellite-based systems and services in these markets. NSR will also quantify
demand and revenue forecasts for the various market segments identified that
satellites can target.
