Abstract
Next generation networks, or NGNs, have become big news. This is especially
the case for European incumbents as first BT, and then others, pour
significant amounts of investment and marketing budget into this area. For
most, if not all, of these big players, NGN is now critical to their continued
success and perhaps even survival. There is still a debate around speed and
extent of deployment as they are all operating under different market
conditions, but the questions around 'should we or shouldn't we?' all seem to
have been answered. This report looks at the current drivers for NGN
deployment by incumbent operators, the links with IMS and any plans for fixed
mobile convergence in their strategy development.
