Abstract
This DSL benchmark analyses the Ovum top ten DSL countries in the world. The
countries were selected according to high levels of DSL penetration in
conjunction with overall subscriber numbers.
The countries benchmarked are:
- Korea
- France
- Taiwan
- Japan
- Netherlands
- Germany
- UK
- Italy
- USA
- Hong Kong.
Between 2004 and 2005, we saw the strongest actual growth take place in the US
and France. Despite a strong cable sector in the US, DSL has grown
considerably due to the healthy broadband market. In France, demand for
advanced content as well as intense competition has helped drive DSL, making
it the second largest sector. Growth in many countries is tailing off, as
markets become more saturated, and even in one case (Korea), is beginning to
fall. This decrease is due to strong growth in FTTH and FTTB+LAN technologies,
gradually replacing DSL in the access network. We expect Taiwan, Hong Kong and
Japan to follow this trend in the coming two to five years.
