Scope and Methodology
The report data were obtained from government sources, trade associations,
publications, business journals, company literature, and investment reports.
It also identifies key trends affecting the marketplace, an overview on end
users, and profiles major marketers, along with manufacturer strategies used
to maximize growth and profitability.
Shipment statistics are derived from the U.S. Census of Manufacturers and are
estimated and forecasted by SBI. Import and export data by major country of
origin are derived from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S.
International Trade Commission. Historical data are provided for 2001 through
2005 with forecast data from 2006 to 2010. Price trends were tracked from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index.
The market size of siding is defined as the value of siding supplied to the
total U.S. marketplace, in a particular period. Therefore, market size is
determined by supply rather than demand. The U.S. siding market supply
(henceforth referred to as market size) was calculated from the Department of
Commerce statistics by collecting data from domestic plant shipments, adding
imports, and extracting exports. As such, the formula for determining the
siding market size will be Production in the U.S. + Balance of Trade [i.e.
Shipments + (Imports - Exports)].
Also, note that the values are in net selling values, i.e., free on board
(f.o.b.) from the manufacturing plant, and not the retail/wholesale price sold
to the end consumer.
SBI designates the overall siding product business as the market, and the
various product areas within the market as segments.
