Abstract
REPORT OVERVIEW AND SCOPE
This report comprises an examination of the present and future North American
and European markets for COTS products. Included are current market sizes
(base year 2005) and forecasts through year 2010, along with brief
descriptions of selected technologies. Trends are identified, markets
analyzed, and strategies recommended.
Report Highlights
The leading method of applications software procurement by users of embedded
COTS systems remains in-house development. VME continues to be the industry
standard board architecture with the integration of new technologies into the
standard. North America, fueled by consumption of the United States military,
is the largest market for Embedded COTS Systems. Among integrated systems,
passive backplane systems comprised most of the market, largely because the
primary alternative approach, motherboard-based server systems, are not
perceived as being reliable and rugged enough to be viable in combat
situations.

METHODOLOGY
The quality of this report is based upon the strength of VDC' s methodology.
Our 34 years of market research and consulting experience allows us to design
robust methodologies that yield the most valuable analyses and insights for
our clients. To produce these reports, the following methodology was used:
Primary research comprised interviews with and/or surveys of vendors of
boards, systems, RTOSs, and development tools; defense planners; OEMs; Systems
Integrators; end users, etc.
Supply Side Research - VDC conducted research among more than seventy
vendors, serving the embedded COTS market. Typically, senior management
personnel familiar with the company' s business, marketing and product
engineering activities were interviewed to provide the in-depth information
required by VDC' s exhaustive questionnaire.
Demand Side Research - An online survey, in cooperation with Military
& Aerospace Electronics Magazine, was conducted among planners, defense
contractors/subcontractors, OEMs, systems integrators and end users that
purchase COTS computing products. An additional online survey was conducted
among software developers.
Extensive Secondary Research - Secondary data sources included Web
sites, annual reports, 10Ks and 10Qs, product literature, trade periodicals,
other VDC studies, and the like.
