Abstract
VDC Research Group is pleased to announce the release of its two-volume report
on Industrial Electronic Operator Interface Solutions. Volume 1 covers the
monitor and operator interface terminal hardware products. Volume 2 covers the
software products. During these unprecedented economic times, it is vital to
make the right investments in the areas with the best return. The Industrial
Operator Interface solutions market (OPI) is an area that continues to evolve
and shows great promise. For a supplier competing in this market or
investigating market entry, it is critical to understand that the current
generations of OPI solutions are being viewed as strategic enabling
technologies. They are being integrated into more enterprise IT platforms,
subject to more complex security regimes, and require the support of multiple
vendors. In short, no longer are they seen ‘simply' as digital control
panels. Successful vendors will realize, internalize and apply these ideas to
their offerings, business models, channel networks, technical support
capabilities and demand creation activities.
Research Highlights
- Web Browser - This is expected to be the fastest-growing product
market segment of those studied through 2013. These terminals provide
flexibility through networking and remote monitoring in factories and offices,
making these useful for factory/office integration as well as maintenance
applications.
- Portable - Shipments of portable operator interface terminals are
expected to have the second fastest growth rate over the forecast period of
all the product categories studied. Declining prices of small, bright LCD
screens and the increasing adoption of wireless communication networks are
contributing to this growth.
- PC-Based - This is the second largest product market under study.
Relatively strong growth is expected in this segment despite some overlap in
capability with less expensive graphic terminals.
- Graphic - This is the largest product market under study, and is
expected to have the largest dollar volume growth over the forecast period
through 2013.
- Alphanumeric - Shipments of alphanumeric operator interface
terminals to markets in North America are expected for decline over the
forecast period as these are displaced by more versatile graphic, PC-based,
Web browser, and portable terminals. Alphanumeric terminals will continue to
be sold for niche applications not requiring the additional features or
capabilities these provide.
