East Europe' s plain bottled water market grew by 14.7% in 2006 to reach 11,932 million litres and a market value of Euros 4,473 million. Water for coolers now represent 10% of the total volume, with the region' s installed base of units generating 1.2 billion litres of bulk water in the year.

The East European bottled water market has made considerable gains since 2001, growing by 70.8% in absolute volume terms. This represents compound annual growth of 11.3% over the 2001 to 2006 period. Average bottled water consumption per person has reached 37.8 litres - almost twice the level reported in 2001.

Many East European countries have evolved well-established traditions for drinking water, due to an availability of mineral and curative sparkling waters.
