About the market
Soft drinks worldwide continue to forge new growth opportunities. The five
soft drinks categories covered by Zenith' s fully updated 2007 report - bottled
water, carbonates, dilutables/concentrates, fruit juice/nectars, and still
drinks - have had mixed fortunes across the globe. However, as a combined
category, soft drinks overall do remain a sustainable growth proposition,
achieving 5% volume growth to reach 512 billion litres in 2006. This
translated into global soft drinks consumption of 80 litres per person.
Globally, bottled water continued to be the fastest growing soft drinks sector
- up 8% in 2006, with the fundamental values of quality, purity, availability
and everyday hydration remaining strong. Still drinks, those non-carbonated
beverages with less than 25% juice content, also continued to record good
volume increases, with consumption rising by 6% in 2006. This growth has been
sustained by the emergence of new functional juice-based beverages and through
the steady performance of sports drinks. Meanwhile, fruit juice/nectars grew
3%, followed by carbonates on 2.4%, a slight increase on 2005 levels and
dilutables achieving 1.4 % growth.
Economic obstacles and climate fluctuations will, of course, present numerous
challenges, but the outlook for global soft drinks is as strong today as it
has ever been.
